NIHR Research Programmes

The National Institute for Health Research Central Commissioning Facility (NIHR CCF) currently commissions research for the following NIHR research programmes:

  • NIHR Programme Grants for Applied Research – substantial awards for leading applied health research groups to tackle high priority health issues
  • NIHR Programme Development Grants – funding to enable a research team to undertake preparatory work for a Programme Grant application
  • NIHR Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) – regionally commissioned NHS research arising from daily practice to contribute to improvements
  • NIHR Invention for Innovation (i4i) – funding new solutions and ideas for medical technologies or devices that meet existing or emerging healthcare needs
  • Research for Innovation, Speculation and Creativity (RISC) – supports radical, high impact proposals unlikely to gain traditional peer review support.

NIHR Research Schools

The NIHR Research Schools also report into NIHR CCF:

  • The NIHR School for Primary Care Research brings together the leading academic centres for primary care research in England whose focus is on research to improve everyday practice in primary care
  • The NIHR School for Social Care Research aims to increase the evidence-base for adult social care practice by undertaking high-quality primary research and by providing a focus for applied research in social care within the NIHR
