Professor Nicholas Tarrier
Professor of Clinical Psychology and Head of Clinical Psychology
Nicholas Tarrier is Head of the Division of Clinical Psychology and Research Director of
the School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Manchester.
He obtained his PhD from the Institute of Psychiatry, London in 1977 and clinical
qualifications from the University of Manchester in 1981. Subsequently he worked in the
NHS in Salford and took up his current post as Professor of Clinical Psychology in 1991.
He has also spent some time working in Brazil and Australia.
His main research interests have been in understanding the mechanisms underlying
psychological disorders and in developing and evaluating psychological treatments,
especially in the evaluation of cognitive-behavioural treatments in psychosis and
also in post traumatic stress disorder. A particular interest has been in how
research results are disseminated into clinical practice. He continues to work
part time in the NHS providing a clinical service in Manchester.
