NIHR Senior Investigators are NIHR’s most prominent and prestigious researchers. Senior Investigators are making the most outstanding contribution to research essential for decision-making in health and in social care, and are fundamental to NIHR Faculty.

NIHR Senior Investigators receive an annual award of £15,000 a year as a personal discretionary fund. Their appointments:

  • are a source of prestige, providing an incentive for Investigators to achieve this status
  • acknowledge senior researchers and their work, enhancing esteem for applied clinical research
  • reward internationally prominent researchers carrying out clinical and applied people based health and social care research
  • provide a focus for the NIHR Faculty
  • provide visible leadership in NIHR by forming the NIHR College
  • be a key source of advice to the Director of the NIHR

In the first three annual rounds of open competition 203 successful applicants were selected by an international panel of judges, chaired by Dr Ruth Barrington.
